Boggs Mountain Classic Race #4 Report April 15, 2012
On the last day of spring break, 20 Redwood racers slogged through a rain soaked course that was drying out in some places and big mud wallows in other spots. Some riders came off the course looking like they had battled with the mud, while others had just minor skirmishes. Race day temperatures started chilly, but the day warmed up so spectators could shed layers of fleece and down and it even felt warm! This was especially nice for the campers that endured a chilly night!
The team pre-ride on Saturday was well attended and the team gathered again for a pre-race meal, team bonding, and fun which the Whitworths graciously hosted at their cabin nearby. Thank you to the Whitworths for the excellent hospitality! Dinner was delicious, fun crowd! And no minibike injuries! The team did all kinds of tricks for swag (schwag)!
The girls races got off on time with only one rider crashing on the start. Unfortunately, she crashed into Morgan! Not to worry though, Morgan kept her wits and made up the time and then some. She came in first with a comfortable margin. Sarah Ogden was Redwood's other first place finisher and despite still no call up, she was first to the single track (hole shot) and took off from there. Josie Nordrum looked relaxed and had an excellent race, coming in a very close second. The top three Varsity girls are very competitive and have switched off the top 3 places in the last 4 races, however, Josie was over 4 minutes ahead of the third place finisher. Gabriella had a personal best and podium finish in the sophomore girls race, coming in 4th! It was nice to see all those Redwood girls up on the podium!!!!
And then on to the boys races - which were delayed with messy starts. In every race, at least a few went down on the starts and for the JV and Varsity boy starts - it was carnage. Entire rows went down with the next row falling on top. Only the first few slipped through and it really spread out the field. Once out of the starting area, reports came back of more crashes and dropped chains. Ian rode all but the first lap with his front brakes bent in - un-operational and adding extra drag (did sparks fly?) AND despite that he came in 4th to another podium finish in JV boys. Nicely done! Sam Redman also had his personal best for this season in the competitive JV boys division. Adam Loo continues to improve every race and had his best finish this season in the enormous sophomore category.
Scoring points for the team: Josie, Ben, Devin, Sarah, Taylor, Ian, Morgan, and Gabriella. Speaking of team, while Redwood came in third for Boggs, we are only 12 points out from first place, holding second despite injuries and lots of mechanicals (brakes, chains, tires, derailleurs). Have heard the coaches are already "on it". Am not exactly sure what that translates to, but probably should plan for later dinners on training days. Perhaps they are building a Stafford Lake simulator.
In overall standings, Redwood racers are impressive. Josie holds 2nd place for Varsity girls a mere 10 points out from 1st. Morgan is in 2nd place overall for Sophomore girls. Ian stands at 4th place in JV boys. Sarah is in 8th place in JV girls, having no score for Granite Bay. Annika is in 9th for Freshman girls. Josh is in 10th and Grady in 11th place for Sophomore Boys. Ben is in 12th place and Devin in 19th for the super competitive Varsity Boys division. Marcus is in 15th, and will jump up in the rankings when one race score is dropped. Daniel is 18th and Drake is 22nd in Freshman boys. Adam is in 21st and Eric in 25th in the sophomore field of 85 racers. Sam is in 24th and Ryan in 25th out of a field 84 JV racers.
Injuries reported: Marcus had a shoulder injury that took him out of the race.
Thank you to the awesome coaches for leading the team - you are all part-mechanic, -psychologist, -healer, -trainer, -motivator, -nutritionist, -gear lugger, -friend. Thank you to the families that brought lots of yummy food out to the pit zone. The new coffee pot was a welcome addition to the pit zone. Thank you to Julia & Susann for sweet talking trainer loans from the competition.

Laguna Seca Race report- Success!
04/03/12 08:27 pm by Adminstrator
by Mimi Ogden The theme of this race was "Team". It started with gathering to carb-load at one long dinner table. Just like one big Italian family (with separate checks). While the team hung out at one end, the parents got to know each other at the other. Fun evening with lots of good vibe. The entire team rolled in early to Laguna Seca to catch a chance to check out the course and the pit was a busy, windy place. During the race, teammates supported each other with yells of encouragement. The pit zone was again a busy hub in the afternoon, where racers refueled on delicious food and relaxed and shared race stories. And it all ended with a team all in red with huge smiles on the top of the podium. Nice effort team! Notable for this race: no pre-ride on Saturday which had the unintended consequence of everyone arriving at 8am and enduring a 45 minute wait to pay $8 to get in. (one guy selling tickets and 2 observing - really?) As a result, the races were delayed 30 minutes to allow racers to arrive at the venue. Also notable, this race had some serious climbs, including "hurl hill" which was aptly named. No major injuries reported for the 22 Redwood racers. Lots of racers improved on their finish positions since East Garrison: Josie, Morgan, Annika, Cameron, Daniel, Adam, Eric, Ryan, Sam, Ian, Nico, Devin and Ben. And a few racers have improved their finishes each race since Granite Bay: Ryan, Sam, Eric, Daniel, Cameron and Morgan. The podium was visited multiple times by Redwood racers and Redwood girls came through with 3 first place finishes for Josie, Sarah and Morgan! Josie won the Varsity girls race by a comfortable (& impressive) 2 minute, 2 second margin and also earned the coveted leaders jersey! It may be a 3 way tie for points in Varsity girls, but the one who wins last gets the honor and it's all Josie's. Strong work! Sarah had a nice margin over the second place finisher, who doubled over at the finish line. Morgan, in her 3rd mountain bike race ever, pulled off a first place finish and surprised the field. "Where did she come from?" the second place finisher was heard saying. Marcus and Ian also made the podium in 2nd and 4th place in the uber competitive JV boys division. Racing four laps, they had super fast split times. And then, we all waited for the team results. When Drake was called up in 3rd place, a rustling of excitement came from Team Redwood's corner. Then Salinas was called up and we all knew - Redwood was in first place (by 81 points!). A sea of red stormed the podium, pushing the enormous Salinas team and the small group from Drake's team to the sides. They say a picture tells a thousand words -- see attached! Note how little green there is. The coaching staff turned up in force and was everywhere. Thank you for your continued dedication. It's working. See some of the happy coaches in photo attached. Thank you to our sponsors! City Cycle, Mellow Motors, Mike’s Bikes, Heffernan Insurance Brokers, Violich Farms, Robert Hess and Company Insurance Brokers, WTB, Five Points Fitness, John Herschleb DDS, Servino Ristorante, Caffe Acri, Larkspur Family Dentistry and NorCal! The pit zone keeps getting better! Thank you to the parents and coaches that brought all the delicious food! Including those that brought extra food for parents! There really was a lot of (extra) food -- it would be great to have the pit zone be inclusive for all and just have the rule be "check to see that there is lots of that food item before parents/siblings eat". It's really a long day at a remote venue and we should be one big happy Redwood family. Keep shredding the GNAR! Results

East Garrison Race Report 2 of 2
03/19/12 07:31 pm by Adminstrator
by Mimi Ogden Redwood entered the Central Coast Classic with 24 racers and for the first time had a competitor in all 8 categories! Coach Ezra proclaimed it the worst conditions NorCal had ever raced in. While parts of the course drained pretty well, other areas were muddy wallows. (Can someone work on a detergent sponsor?) Fortunately, by race time, there were short bursts of rain interspersed with occasional appearances by the sun.
Last time, they were at the bottom of the report, but the heros of the day, our coaches, move to the top this round. Despite the monsoon-like conditions, 8 very dedicated coaches slogged through the rain and hail and were there to help in any way, and they deserve a huge round of applause for all that they did and do. Bravo to Vip, John, Jay, Jake, Jenn, Wayne, Ezra and Rob!!!! We do have the best coaches!
The pit zone just keeps improving -- and a much needed refuge on day battling both the elements and the mountain. Thank you to all the parents that stocked the pit with yummy food -- and a special shout out to Ezra for bringing the cookstove and making hot food and beverages possible! Yummy chili, pasta and salads!
24 racers started and finished the race. There were a fair share of mechanical issues and scrapes with the plant life out on the course, but no major injuries on Redwood reported. While team results are still several days away, we can still point out that Redwood had 5 podium finishers, Drake had 3 and San Rafael had 2. Team scoring, for those that don't want to dive into the NICA rule book, the top 8 finishers scores count and 2 scores must be girls and 2 must be boys. After the first race at Granite Bay, Redwood was 65 points away from the 1st place team, and thanks to Josie, Sarah, Morgan, Marcus, Taylor, Ian, Grady and Josh, that gap closed considerably at East Garrison. (Twist my arm, how close? Best guess on unofficial times is Redwood is 7 points out from 1st place, in solid 2nd, but the scoring got a little wacky in the frosh/soph boys race, so just a guess). Get ready for Laguna Seca on 4/1!
Great effort by all the riders and for hanging in there with mechanicals, mud and stiff competition!

East Garrison Race Report 1 of 2
03/19/12 07:30 pm by Adminstrator
Jake Moritz I didn't take any notes or record final results from East Garrison, but I thought I would follow up on my last race report with a quick summary of the RHS race weekend in Monterey. The dismal weather forecast that predicted two days of cold temperatures and patches of rain held true to its promise. Driving down on Saturday morning through intermittent showers made me wish that I had chosen to coach an extracurricular activity that is more hospitable, like chess. Or perhaps bowling.
The race course was fast and flowing. Scrub brush and coastal oak trees lined the well-crafted banked turns and single track. The tighter sections were interconnected by spurts of sandy or gravel double track that would break up the tempo of even the most talented riders' flow. The course wasn't technically difficult and the two points labelled with overly zealous red "Danger" signs weren't an issue for any of the team. The challenge lay in the speed that the Redwood riders could maintain through out the course; there were few places to rest, flew places to grab a drink, and nowhere to let down one's guard.
The pre-ride on Saturday revealed how much the team has progressed. In November I could keep up with nearly all of the riders with the exception of a handful. Now I have to work hard to stay ahead of the majority of the team. One of the freshmen, Daniel, flew by me with his head down and legs pumping. He was entirely unaware that I had paused along the trail and was entirely consumed by his speed and the trail ahead. I could only watch and laugh. It was a such a pleasure to have Josh Lawrence ride up along side me on some sandy double track and silently dare me to go faster merely by grinning and accelerating forwards. There was a good presence of RHS rides on Saturday and the pre-ride gave everyone the chance to burn off some excess energy and pre-race jitters and prepare them for what was a fun and challenging Sunday.
And then we went racing. I can't remember much of the details, only that there were was a good presence of crimson on the podium at the end of the day. I was more focused on watching riders complete each lap than their times on a rain-soaked score chart. I'll call out a few who impressed me and I welcome the other coaches to add their thoughts.
Sarah Ogden arrived with a more-than-healthy dose of anxiety going into her first race in Junior Varsity race. Her victory at Granite Bay was so decisive that she moved up a level, and then won again. The patches of rain, hail, and sunshine didn't help matters much but she crossed the start line with a clear race strategy and it worked. Sarah passed two waves of riders on the first hill and then disappeared for 20 minutes. When she came through on her next lap, she pedaled smoothly just a foot behind the girl in first. As they rounded the corner to the first climb, Sarah made one of the best passes I have seen in mountain bike racing. It wasn't technical, it wasn't close, but the speed with which Sarah passed the leader was astonishing. It was as if as Sarah passed, the air went out of the leasers tires, her legs turned to lead, and the weight of the world anchored her in place. By the top of the hill Sarah was twenty yards ahead, a lead that only increased until she crossed the finish.
Morgan Tardy had a fantastic finish in fourth in the Girl's Sophomore class and came across the finish line smiling. At the first race I predicted a podium finish from Morgan sometime during the season, I just never expected it to be so soon. Congratulations.
Grady Pollisson won the Sophomore boy's division calmly and like a gentleman. He started the race quietly among the legions of competitors, passed folks, passed some more, and then came across the finish line, quietly smiled and got of his bike. I like to think he takes on the characteristics of a crazed mercenary when he is racing, but I think he stays quiet and polite. Which is terrible, because there is nothing worse than being passed by some who smiles and says "Thank You." And I have equal appreciation for Michael Pollison because despite a miserable first race and some trepidation this time around, he came and rode really well. Michael you have the spirit of a great racer and I look forward to seeing what happens this season.
I ignored Taylor Whitworth in my last recap and with this week's result I have to give a mention. He finished seventh(-ish) in a group of fast JV competitors. Maybe it was some extra corn flakes in the morning or a cup of must-have-been-decaf coffee but Taylor left whatever dogged him at the last race in Granite Bay behind him.
But the best moment of the weekend for me came when Ian Stowe rode past the feed zone on his last lap, tired, hurting, and wishing the race would end. Ian was hunched over the handlebars as he came by the feedzone, up a hill that must have seemed to get steeper with every lap. I tried to pass him a fresh bottle of water, but he waved me off. Right as he rode by we made eye contact and Ian exhaled: "I feel sick." I think he may even have turned a little green as he said it. In a glorious moment of inspiration, and in my best attempt to be a supportive and helpful coach, I gave him a line that we always think, but rarely bother to say "THEN GO FASTER!" Ian, if that moment caused you any trauma, then have your people talk to my people and we can do lunch.
It was a great weekend with RHS riders, parents, and coaches. Until next time, think muddy thoughts.

Granite Bay Race Report 2/26/12
03/01/12 08:46 am by Adminstrator
by Jake Mortiz and Mimi Ogden The top of a podium is a comfortable vantage point to look from, on a day of racing at Granite Bay, and a few brief months of preparation. The Redwood High School Mountain Bike team got to see a field of friends, parents, coaches and competitors. Most of the crowd smiled and others stood with grim expressions, but everyone recognized the significance of a worn chain ring epoxied upright into a small block of wood: Redwood was the first place team. The Granite Bay race course in the Folsom State Recreation Area was manicured and dry, a departure from past years. Race day was cool and the morning dew made the flowing wooded single-track firm and fast while the portions of the course on the beach were loose but luckily not a quagmire. The course benefited riders of all abilities who could take advantage of their individual strengths ascending, descending, or handling technical rocky areas within the six-mile loop. Redwood High School finished well and all of the riders left the track without critical injuries, so by the most basic of standards, it was a good day. The experienced riders knew what awaited them: the crowds and cowbells, the camaraderie of the competitors before the start and the knocking of handle bars just after, the anxiety the night before, the pre-race jitters and aching legs and a stomach yearning for food just after the finish. Sarah Ogden finished first in the Sophomore category, putting over 2 minutes between her and the next finisher by heeding teammate Josie’s advice that if they can see you, they can catch you. Josie Nordrum finished second in Varsity Girls. She finished second ahead of a national champion and friend. And she finished with a fast third lap matching the time of her first lap. Morgan Tardy, in her first race, crossed the finish line in sixth, midpack in the Sophomore girls division, with excellent form and an honest smile. Annika Weiss, in her first race, came in 11th place for freshman girls and had a strong 2nd lap. For the Redwood boys - Junior Ben Suliteneau finished 10th in the very competitive Varsity boys field, racing 24 miles in 1:39:30. In the JV division, Redwood was well represented on the podium with Marcus Segedin coming in 3rd in an exciting finish and Ian Stowe riding strong to a 5th place podium position. Taylor Whitworth finished 14th in the field of 75 racers. Ryan Moore and Sam Redman sprinted to the finish together. For Sophomore boys, Josh Lawrence in his first mountain bike race, pulled an impressive 8th place finish in a field of 82 racers. Grady Pollison came in 14th.
Congrats to the new racers. The experienced riders know what they were doing, knew what they were up against, and knew how to prepare for it. For Drake, Cam, Annika, Morgan, Josh, Daniel, Eric, and Matt, the new riders, they could only go on a vague idea of what awaited them, some technical skill, a little good judgment, and some luck. Eric came off the course smiling, telling a coach how great it was that a competitor had knocked him down while trying a pass. So Eric offered him a hand. His sportsmanship will pay off and is an asset that cannot be taught. Cam now knows the heartless truth of how quickly defeat can set in. A mangled chain nearly sent him walking back to the pits, but he fixed it. And he finished, and he rode well, and he finished, and he was angry, and he finished. Blood, sweat, and tears aside, he finished: that matters far more than a few digits on a result sheet. The entire Redwood team shared in the glory of standing on the top podium with a first place team finish, beating Drake by 9 points. The Drake coach hesitated before climbing onto the second place box, but Jake jokingly asked him if he could see us from “all the way down there.” He smiled and quietly recognized that Redwood is a legitimate competitor this season. Drake may regret having “3X Champions” on the back of their jerseys this year, but after Granite Bay, every rider with a Redwood tree on the front of their jerseys has unwittingly also adopted a target on the back. Practice well, ride hard. It is still a long season.
Extra special thanks and love to all the coaches! The dedication and time from pre-season to race day with the Redwood racers is above and beyond and very appreciated! On race day, the coaches were everywhere - pre-riding the course, calming race jitters, tuning bikes, talking race strategy, reminding riders to get to their start times, running from the feed zone up the hill to continue to shout out words of encouragement, handing out water bottles and goo in the feed zone, looking for caps for the ends of handlebars, and most deservedly joining the team on the podium. Amazing effort and we thank you!
Thank you to those volunteering for NorCal - Barb and Jeff Redman for course marshalling, Susann Nordrum for riding as a sweep and Louis Nordrum for policing the feed zone!? Thanks to the parents for stocking the pit zone with food. There are so many pieces to orchestrate and it does take everyone pitching in!
And finally a word to our sponsors - you picked the right team! Thank you to City Cycle, Mellow Motors, Mike’s Bikes, Heffernan Insurance Brokers, Violich Farms, Robert Hess and Company Insurance Brokers, WTB, Five Points Fitness, John Herschleb DDS, Servino Ristorante, Caffe Acri, Larkspur Family Dentistry and NorCal!

The season is off to a good start
01/31/11 10:25 pm by Adminstrator
The 2011 season has finally begun. We have been practicing 3 times a week as a team for the month of January. Fortunately, we have only had one rain out so practices have been very consistent.
A big Thank You to Five Points Fitness that allowed us to use their spin room for 4+ hours a week. They have a fantastic spin set up and just installed about 15 computrainers. They were very accommodating to our large group and we are very grateful!
I also want to acknowledge the Coaching Staff for the year. We are very lucky to have Eddy MacLeod, Ray Storm, Jay Shipley, Natale Servino, Rob Glaser & Mike Whitworth return from last year. In addition, Ned Fox, Marc Kirberg, Josh Josephson, John Herschleb, Jen Sanders, John Thompson, Cammie Urban, and our past head-coach, Ken White, are all on board this year.
Having a solid coaching staff is the core to any successful program. They are the true heros out there, donating their time and energy to teach kids skills both on and off the bike. I for one am very grateful to each and every one of them.
